The LEFT HAND doesn't know what the RIGHT HAND has given
CHARITY - An act of compassion, an obligation on the rich, a right of the poor & a command of the almighty. But one of the greatest errors that many people do is that they practice charity & expect something from people in return. And that expectation can be admiration, political benefit, obedience, name & fame or a simple thank you. This truely is a worthless way of practicing charity.
Remember that the responsibility of providing to all creatures is not on you, but rather it's on the one who created you. In the bewildering wilderness of Amazon and in the depths of Pacific, there exists creatures which would amaze us, but what is more amazing is the fact that these creatures thrive and survive without a 9 to 4 job or any bank balance. A bird leaves it's nest empty stomach and returns after having it's fill everyday. My point being, he who takes care of these creatures can also take care of the poor and the needy of the society. Even if we stop doing charitable deeds, whatever was meant to reach a person will reach him somehow. By doing charity, you become a medium by which God fulfilled the need of a needy & in the meantime you fulfill your obligation as well - the obligation of charity.
In other words, your favor to someone is a favor you do to yourself. So stop acting "GOD" everytime you do something nice. Somewhere deep down that feeling of self admiration & superiority over the one whom we have favored is not something we deserve to have. Even if you say that the money that you spent in charity is a fruit of your efforts, you completely tend to forget that you were able to put those efforts because you were favored by the almighty in countless number of ways.
So when you practice charity, let it not be for the world to know. If the world comes to know somehow without you bragging about it in social media or in banners & newspapers with your scary pictures on them, it's ok. But the optimal way to give charity is that your left hand doesn't know what your right hand has given - ie give it secretly. Let your charity be for the one who can see your good deeds without social media or banners & newspapers - the one cherisher, sustainer, master of humankind who knows what is in your hearts. So that one day when you stand in front of him with all that share of evil you have done, you can also show to him that you had some good within you as well.
